Malaysia

I've not been on a two week holiday for years, so wanted to push the boat out a bit and go to Malaysia. I figured it could give a mix of beach, jungle and city. Are there any tips for booking it cheaper than using a package company? Places to go etc.

Cheers,

Tom

There's pretty much a good chance of rain any day of the year. Forget planning for rain, and bring a good umbrella or raincoat just in case.

Keep me updated...I might be able to bring you around (i'm Singaporean...we're just south of the border.)

travelbag do some decent multicentre trips out there, think i looked at 7 days 5* borneo and 3 days KL for about £950, penang will be cheaper than borneo too, was trying to add another city to it (hong kong or singapore) but it sounded like a ball ache because there weren't direct flights so i'd keep having to transfer to KL, got told one of the major airlines was starting more direct routes towards the end of the year (for some reason im thinking BA) which would make travelling round there easier, so i've put it off this year

tony will probably know

I did KL to Bali with Air Asia for about £60 last time I visited Malaysia  , I'd be surprised if you couldn't forward on to a lot of destinations with Air Asia from there on the cheap ( domestic and international)

in terms of KL then a few days will do you before you move on

if you want to do the Petronas towers then you should pre book it , you'll have almost zero chance of a ticket on the day ... the day I went up they were telling people the next free space was in 5 days time

Batu Caves I jumped on a train and visited , was quite interesting and killed a couple of hours , don't go if you dislike monkeys though

Bukit Bintang was the district I stayed in , was quite lively at a night time , plenty of bars so you wont go thirsty :)

in terms of elsewhere in Malaysia I went to Pangkor Laut which was a resort on it's own Island with beach huts on stilts   , always reminds me of Jurassic park as you hop on these Jeeps to take you around the island to the various beaches , restaurants etc  .. saw my first ever Whale Shark when I was there  :)   ... but it's only a resort island all said and done , great for R&R  not so much for cultural stuff

as V4E said, Travelbag do some decent deals as do Trailfinders

I'd like to spend more time in Malaysia, only done 2 nights in KL and 3 nights in Borneo. Lot more to see and do there for me!

I've been to Malaysia several times and, in fact, I am going in a few days. KL is worth a day or two if your looking for a bit of city life. Penang is a foodie heaven and is a 45 min flight away. Air Asia do flights within Malaysia for as little as £15! Tamal Negara and the Cameron Highlands are both easily accessible from KL and are fantastic for trekking. As for beaches, you can't beat the Perhentien Islands which cn be reached for £30 from KL by taking an hour flight to Kota Bharu and the a shirt boat ride. You could combine Tamal Negara and Perhentien very easily without hoping too far out the way. You do not need to book a package, travel is very cheap in Malaysia and doing it independently gives ubthat much more freedom. Hope that helps. :) Edited by One For The Road

As someone who spent 2 weeks trekking up and down, and living in Taman Negara, I would suggest that you avoid the jungle at all costs. [/quote

Oh really? I enjoyed it immensely. Tho it was 10 years ago I was in that part of Malaysia. What is the issue there? Islamic problems?

Well I known that there are pockets o Muslim extremists operating in Northerm Malaysia and southern Thailand so I thought that perhaps there were some potential security Issues. I personally love jungles so I assumed it was a political issue you were alluding to.

Huge leap there to be fair..

The jungle is ok if it is in small doses and you are in a touristy bit.

I was IN the jungle and it was horrible. You are soaking wet nearly all the time regardless of weather . Leeches can smell you from quite some distance and you can hardly sleep because the jungle at night is like a Prodigy concert.

The R&R in Penang was pretty fantastic though .

Yessss! Going to Malaysia next week. Flying to KL for 3 nights, then Penang and then to Langkawi. Can't wait! Anyone got any tips, anything to definitely do, or not do?

Plans so far are; KL - city stuff, Batu Caves, Petronas Towers, then Penang - Georgetown, try some cool street food, night market, beach stuff, then Lagkawi - rainforest tour, mangrove kayak, beach stuff to relax and eat nice food.

Any advice welcome :)
