Randy Lerner has moved to assist beleaguered manager Paul Lambert by paying £3.25million for Valencia midfielder Carles Gil.

Aston Villa expect to complete the signing of the 22-year-old in the next 48 hours in a deal which represents another show of support for Lambert from his chairman.

Lambert has been determined to add more creativity to his struggling squad and ‎sees Gil as a vital addition.

Gil, who has spent two seasons on loan at Elche, is poised to agree a five-year deal and will fly to England for a medical on Monday. The Spain under-21 international could make his debut against Liverpool this weekend.

Villa's bid to sign Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair is hanging in the balance, however, after the Premier League champions demanded a £4million transfer fee.

Sinclair will also have to take a pay cut from his £50,000 a week salary and the whole package is out of Villa's reach at this stage.

But the capture of Gil is clearly a vote of confidence for Lambert, who spoke with Lerner after the 1-0 defeat at bottom club Leicester City on Saturday.

Lambert endured further chants from his dismissal and is facing a crucial few weeks with games against Liverpool, Bournemouth in the FA Cup, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Welcome to the family Carles, no pressure but you need to save us.

In all seriousness this is quite a coup, Valencia have one of the best academies in Spain, probably the best in fact behind Barca. Their fans rate him as the next David Silva and they're sad to see him leave, however I've seen the majority say he deserves game time and they hope he does well.

I've never seen him so will reserve judgement, especially given that players who are "the next......." never really work out. Wasn't Djimi Traore supposed to be the "next Zidane?"

I wish him well and hope he settles quickly because we need him. Badly.

I believe it was Bruno Cherou; though it was a commonly handed out accolade to Houllier’s signings...

For those who haven't seen it yet.

(The audio has been removed)

Hmmm.... looks very impressive (as do most YouTube videos) but I've discovered a flaw in the plan already.....and if I have I'm pretty sure PL managers will too.

Watch the video.... performs stepover....goes right. Rinse and repeat.

Not trying to be down on him because he can't fail to improve us..... but I worry he'll be sussed fairly rapidly if that is his highlight reel.

Ashley Young did alright out repeating that trick over and over. It doesn't really matter if his marker knows he's going to do it if he still can't do anything about it when he does.

Depends how good he is, though.

I mean, everyone knows exactly what Arjen Robben is going to do every single time he gets the ball.  Most defenders don't even bother showing him on to his right foot because there's just no way he's heading in that direction.  He still scores plenty.  He's still a very good player.

As Pieface says, this is the most exciting signing we've signed for a while.

He could be another Tonev, but Tonev didn't have that unpredictability (is that a word?) about him. Gil does.

He seems to be full of energy, happy to attack down the wing, and he's neither a kid or past it. At 22, he should know his game pretty well, and should be confident enough to play that way for us.

I'm excited.

(Now. You watch him sign, do really well for a few games... and then get injured, and we fear that we'll revert back to the way we've been playing lately :( )

this is interesting. Rough google translation sorry guys.

Carles Gil Valencia will leave once the agreement reached by the club with Aston Villa for sale for 4.5 million euros, plus two others depending on objectives is officially announced in the coming hours: One if it reaches 20 matches the first year and another million if he be international with Spain. The Mestalla institution reserves 10% of a future transfer and a right to match the best possible deals that Birmingham received by him and to repurchase it at that price. This last condition, agreement between Valencia and Carles. Now the player, who has played for 17 years in school, receive a higher salary and will have a five and a half seasons at Aston Villa. Valencia with his buyout clause was 8 million and the contract was lengthened to 2016.
