2016 - a bit early :)

Right,

Had a crappy couple of days - the wifes nan died this morning after a pretty arduous 18 months of her slowly decaying in bed -it's actually quite a relief.

Got a boy due in 6 days too, so thinking somewhere not too far on a plane upto 3 hours say.

Somewhere warm for the wife, but not too hot >30c for me - I got the choice on honeymoon destinations, chose Vegas, Chicago, Toronto & NYC.

Was thinking somewhere new, but I'd go back to Italy as we only visited there once and that was for a skiing resort, so not really too Italian.

Seen Sorrento and that looks nice, can do day trips to Pompeii and Vesuvius etc as well as a full day trip to Rome.

any other ideas? budget of £1500.

Want to book it and shove a deposit down so we've got something to look forward to next year.

Already got plans to go to Octoberfest this year without the nipper, Forest of Dean in a luxury cabin (apparently) in November and in April we're doing the Beatles stuff in Lolerpool.

You can do a day trip to Rome from Sorrento but it's rather rushed and you won't see enough of Rome imo...might be a long day with a small baby as well ... best to have a few days in Rome .... Head up to Florence from Rome and then finish off on the sea front near San Marino at Rimini ... Venice isn't far but it can be rather hot and crowded (and smelly) in the summer

You'd need a hire car to do all that though although ideally

Other than that are you looking to just sit about or do you want some culture and lots of sightseeing ? Croatia can be nice in the summer dubrovnik for example or Europes best capital Budapest lots of culture and then you can cool down at the various outdoor lido's or chill at the thermal baths

Loads of places you can go to really , just depends what you want to be doing

I went to Sorrento for a week a few years back. Took in Pompeii and vesuvious. Also took the trip to Rome for the day. Took in a lot - was tiring but worth it. We went to the Vatican and hung around there before taking in the Sistine Chapel which was extraordinary. We then got back on the coach and headed for the Colosseum - we didn't get to go in or anything but hung around and took in the sheer majesty of the place. To be honest that was enough of Rome for me.

Back in Sorrento we did some lemon-cello tasting which was cool, also went across to Capri which was rather nice indeed. Hung out on a beach there etc. We stayed in a 3 star hotel which was alright, good food in the evening which was included along with some crappy entertainment which was good enough just to doss about for and have a few drinks in the bar - although one evening we ventured into town and got a pizza which was a little different to break up the week... :)

Can be pretty cheap that trip if you plan properly. Definitely worth it if you haven't been before.

yeah that's my concern with the day trip to Rome (if you are into the history aspect ) ..  if you do the Vatican museum , Sistine chapel , climb to the roof and then visit the dead popes the Vatican alone can be a full day .. i left it too late to book and it can be quite hard to get into but the Scavi tours are also worth considering at the Vatican

Going to Rome and not going in the Coliseum would be like going to a Brothel and not sleeping with a prostitute surely ?  then you have the Forum and other stuff to explore  ... ok the Spanish steps are a bit meh and the Trevi fountian ,is just a fountain at the end of the day so can be missed ( i think it's under reconstruction until 2016 anyway ) ..but they are also kinda part of the history of Rome  ...

We did a night walking tour on one of my visits , that was really fascinating .. it was all the off beat stuff and about the kinda feud between Rome and Florence (Medici family)  .. some scruffy small church has a Raphael sculpture in it , at least the style of it and everything about it suggests it is one of his .. officially nobody knows ..tbh I'm not into art but it was all still quite intriguing

Rome is easily 2 -3 days though ..maybe more

Sooooo, with the missus and I getting married next year naturally we are thinking honeymoons! Yay. So, we want to do something 'memorable' and a little different to the normal holidays we have ie going to a hotel and going on some excursions or a villa holiday. We want to try and see a lot of one or a couple of places.

We have found a trip to Costa Rica which pretty much covers the whole country - from San Jose to trekking in the jungle. 2 weeks, sounds ideal. Whilst we are over there, if quite like to make the most of it and take in another location. I'm thinking perhaps heading down to Panama City.

Has anyone been to either of these places? Would you recommend going? Any hints tips etc etc?

Cheers all

One of my options for this summer is Costa and Panama Canal so let me know if you find anything ( and vice versa )

One of the holiday companies I looked at were offering the chance to cycle from nicaragia to Panama via Costa ... How energetic are you feeling :)

other option is the full on cruise through the Panama Canal ... They go out of Fort Lauderdale and stop in Aruba , Panama , Colombia , Costa Rica and Honduras ... Not sure if you get enough time in each port to see enough things (I.e wildlife ) though

Hah, whilst we are certainly up for some activity I don't think cycling through the countries will be high up on the list! :)

What have you found thus far Tony? We have looked on a couple of honeymoon sites and they offer complete packages that take in both Costa Rica and Panama. I think Kuoni is one of the sites. I believe these are all guided so we won't necessarily be alone. I'm just not sure im confident enough to travel all around the country to take in the different experiences on our own, as such. As I mentioned we are normally just resort, book through Thompson type people.
