Strange Wifi Problem

I have a really bizarre issue on my Sky Router at home.

Last night the power went off for less than a minute but came back on again and everything seemed fine, however I noticed that my phone couldnt connect to the wifi on the router. I would go to connect but them would just show it as saved.

To cut a long story short I traced the problem down to if the Home PC was connected via ethernet then nothing could connect to it via wifi but as soon as the cable was unplugged or the connection disabled on the PC the wifi worked as normal.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a wifi issue as well. My tablet dances around the internet very quickly, but my desktop is slow as molasses. I run antivirus software and run "Clean My Mac" almost every day...any ideas?

I'm prepared to bet that Windows is the issue. It'[s time for a re-install or an upgrade to Linux.

How much? I'll take whatever you're offering at any odds you like.

and run "Clean My Mac" almost every day

Says you've got a losing proposition on your hands.

The "get rid of windows, upgrade to Linux" shtick is pretty tiring. Linux users are like vegans and engineers, you don't have to ask if they are one, they'll make sure you know.

I'd be more willing to bet it's due to location of desktop if it's on wireless as well, the tablet probably gets used closer to the router, the desktop is probably sat upstairs in a corner with most of the signal being blocked.

is the desktop a Mac? If so, get " app cleaner" and delete clean my mac with it (or at least stop using it). It's sometimes reviewed as,er, not the best piece of software*. It's possible it's that slowing you down. You don't need it, anyway, there are better, free utilities - get onyx. Run that in automatic mode, with everything ticked. Restart. If you don't want to get those two things, drag clean my Mac to the trash, open disk utility, repair permissions, empty trash, restart then try it.

*post edited - some reviews indicate it can cause problems, others that it's OK, but you have to pay for it and you really don't need a paid for gubbins to keep the mac clean.

Another thing you could do if you're still having problems is to clean out all the network settings and re-select your wifi network.

A tenner at negative evens?

Yeah, my bad for missing that.

We are having huge issues at work with all the mac gear not connecting to wifi properly since they were upgraded to the latest (improperly tested again) version. Has the mac been updated recently and about the time the issues started?

Sorry guys.

Yes reset router. still same issue.

Powered Router off completely and then back on again.

Powered of PC and back on again

Still the wifi issue persists.

I am going to try plugging a different PC into it tonight which should tell me if its the PC or the router thats got a problem/

when the PC is plugged in via ethernet does it get internet or not ? if it does not then probably the ethernet port on the PC is borked, if it does then either its the router itself or you have setup (accidentally of otherwise) a ad-hoc wireless connection to the pc.

There's probably some setting in there which turns off the WiFi when you have the switch port in use. It doesn't sound bizarre to me, just annoying.

When you say you've reset it, what do you mean? Turning it off and on again is not enough.

Have you tried calling sky? They'll send a proper technician out with any luck.

This.^^^^^ - reset the router with the reset button, or from another device - tablet or 'puter.

Also, it may be that the router has picked a channel that is getting interfered with by something else. Maybe force it a particular channel.

go to http://192.168.0.1/and fettle the settings from there. you might need to type in a name and pass, if so I think it's SKY and ADMIN, but google will tell you.

Problem solved, and the issue was the CMOS battery was dead.

Replaced the battery and the WiFi issue disappeared.

Or it was a massive coincidence............

Did you (or your neighbour) stop using a large appliance?

No, I'm not running the latest OS. The problem started when I moved to a new state with a new ISP and I'm using wifi now instead of plugging right in. But my tablet runs fine, even when I use it at my desktop.

The problem is caused by the custome tech used to make air drop and airplay work.

This is the fix for now, till apple get their act together:

In OS X Yosemite - open up Terminal and type in the following command to disable AWDL and AirDrop:

sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

(to restore AirDrop and AWDL: sudo ifconfig awdl0 up,

obviously).

HTH

sudo ifconfig awdl0 up)

This

I’ve been lucky enough not to experience the rampant WiFi issues other people are having, so let us know if this works for you!

I downloaded Onyx, and somehow Mackeeper piggybacked on it, the scumbags. And wouldn't you know it, 2 viruses came with it, which were promptly removed. Clean My Mac has an uninstall feature, so I used that to trash Mackeeper. Ran Onyx, restarted, etc. Not seeing the results I was hoping for, TBH.

Where the heck did the viruses come from? if you get it from the writer (http://www.titanium.free.fr/) then it's not anything to do with Onyx.

Suspect the nasties are from somewhere or something else. Glad you found them. Maybe worth getting the free  Clamxav mac virus thingummy too to look for nasties.

I know it's a big thing to have to do, but I'd be tempted were it my mac to back up all my music and docs etc. and then do a clean install/upgrade. What version of the OS is it? That isn't probaly the most logical next step a advosor would say to do, but you'd know you had a clean mac as a start.

The versions that are (IMO) the best are snow leopard and then mavericks or yosemite, notwithstanding some people have a yosemite wifi issue as SImon said above, though 99%+ are fine.

if you're using older than snow leopard, then maybe the time has come to upgrade and have the better protection a later OS offers? 5+ year old OS's kind of need to be updated, really.
