Who Would be Next?

As the overwhelming majority of fans (on VT at least) now seem to be in favour of sacking Lambert, the question now emerges of who would we replace him with if he did go?

To save clogging up the Lambert thread I thought we could put the discussion here.

So, even if you don't agree that it's the right decision, in the hypothetical scenario that Lambert is sacked tomorrow, who would you replace him with?

(Obviously I'm talking within the realms of reality here. Who could we attract?)

I'm going to go with Steve McLaren. Simply because he's got a good record in domestic football, he's English and he's currently managing locally so wouldn't have to move too far, probably. However, whether he would see Villa as a better career move is a different matter altogether. He's got past history at Derby as well and, I guess, will undoubtedly be seeing a promotion to the Premier League with them as a better looking achievement on his CV than just keeping Villa in the Premier League.

Obviously, there are lots of other names that could be mentioned but, for me, I wouldn't mind us going for Shteve and seeing what he can do back in the top flight. besides, if he relegated us, nobody would feel bad about giving him lots of stick!

I wonder if he'd be put off given the reaction the last time he was rumoured to be joining.

FWIW I don't think he'd be a bad shout either. He'd probably mean we get a bit of stick, but he's underrated since his brolly days.

Pulis for me as he knows how to work with what he's got and can get instant results. Don't care if it's short term till the end of the season and a mid table finish. The new owner can sort out our superstar manager when he get's here!

I know a few people aren't that fond of him but I think Sherwood would be a good choice.

Now that's a choice I would wholeheartedly disagree with.

He's a clown.

Plus he has too high an opinion of himself to come here.

Paul clement would be my choice but whether he'd come here is another matter altogether

Decent shout, not sure he'd want to swap working with Ronaldo, Bale, James etc for us but you never know, actually being the main man at a PL club would probably appeal to a lot of coaches.

Yeah very interesting shout. Must admit whilst I knew the name, I didn't really know who he was

Yes that was my thinking behind it as well, i've given it quite a bit of thought and i think he would come here

Oh, posted this in the Lambert thread before I saw this one:

For a more viable option, I'd suggest Bernd Schuster. He has a good pedigree, plays decent football but with the pragmatism required in this league. Did a solid job at Malaga last season who were in a complete mess when he arrived and have a worse owner than us. He's currently unemployed too.

Like I said in the other thread, I think a very good manager who is currently slipping under the radar, at least over here, is Unai Emery at Sevilla.
But I very much doubt he'd be remotely interested in coming here. The only hope would be if he had some sort of desire to move to the premier league.

But I don't see why he would have that, and even if he did, Sevilla are doing very well at the moment so it would be the wrong time for him to move anyway.

So I think my answer would be Moyes. I don't think he's the man to lead us to the champions league and beyond. Like I've said elsewhere I think he has a ceiling, but that ceiling is way way higher than where we are right now.

We don't have to employ a manager who will be here for 20 years. But a few years under Moyes, a manager who is used to working under financial restrictions and has proved he can get more out of an average team than the sum of their parts, would be beneficial to us.

Plus I think he'd be after a job where he can prove a point. He can only really improve us from where we are now so it would be a good fit. I don't think he'll have many better offers in the near future either. newcastle would be the only job that may be available, but they have an even worse owner situation than us!

So yeah, Moyes would be my realistic choice.
