KnowHow Insurance

Anyone got any experience with this lot?

I bought my laptop in 2009, and got insurance with it at £7.99 a month (don't really know why, but I did). It was "Whatever Happens" insurance at the time from Currys, but that's now been rolled up into "KnowHow", I assume as a result of their merger/takeover of PC World.

Anyway, in July I dropped my laptop and it basically smashed to bits. So I thought "great, I still pay that insurance, I'll claim on that"
So they picked it up on Tuesday 22nd july and told me they'd have it back, fixed by Sunday 27th.

6 weeks later and I'm still waiting. They rang me in the first week saying they were awaiting parts and it might take longer than they first thought. They've since rung me around once a week telling me the same thing every time. "We're awaiting parts, we'll phone you when we get them"

I've emailed and called them already to not so much complain, but to give them a prod. All anyone has been able to tell me is the same thing "We're awaiting parts. We'll call you when we get them"

6 weeks now. Am I being unreasonable in being annoyed by this?

The laptop is old, and whilst I'd be happy to get it back fixed, I'd also be perfectly happy to get it replaced with a new one to be honest, which they would do if it's unfixable.

So anyone got any experience? Should I complain? Suck it up and wait it out?

I guess this is a bad time to point out you could have £480 in your pocket to buy a new laptop by now? ;)

Being less of a dick, this is on their site, worth a go?

  • Fast fix – we’re so confident we can repair your laptop quickly we’ve made a promise – if we fail to fix it within 14 days you can ask for a replacement.*

Don't worry, you're not being a dick. I'm well aware of that and it annoys me! (it's actually over £500 as it was early 2009, comfortably more than the laptop was worth when I bought it)

Didn't see that on their website. Will give them a ring tonight and ask for a replacement.

That was easy.

5 minute phone call, someone will ring me tomorrow to confirm and arrange my new laptop.

I suspect they were waiting for me to do this but aren't allowed to tell me to do it!

Cheers chaps

They confirmed yesterday that I'm getting a new one. Need to go to a store on Saturday and redeem my voucher code.

They wouldn't tell me how much it was for though.

I bet they try to fob me off with something cheap. Still not sure if I get any choice in the matter.

What did they offer you Stevo?

Oh the offer is fine. £499 which is more than I expected.

But I've since been to 3 different Currys/PC world. The customer service there is shite. Nobody seems to know if I have to spend that all on a laptop or if I can settle for cheaper and use the excess for something else.

And their selection of chromebooks in store is awful. I finally found one I'd be happy with (HP Chromebook14) and they were out of stock. Conversation went as follows:

"Do you have this one in white? I like it but I'm not really into the colour" (it was turqoise)

"No, sorry, this is all we have"

"Ok. Go on, I'll take this one then."

"Sorry, we're actually out of stock of that one"

"Oh, do you know when you'll have more in?"

"no"

"... ok. Can you specifically order one in for me?"

"no"

"Rigggghhhht. Can I use my voucher online instead of instore, then I can order it or one of the others myself"

"No"

No suggestions of anything else. No "Maybe you'd be interested in this one?" Or "have you thought about a tablet instead" or anything like that.

Very helpful.

So yeah, I've been to 3 different shops with £500 to spend and I still haven't bought anything.
