The story of Britain’s Football Chants
TIM MARSHALL
Published 1st August
Original paperback | Kindleir?t=vill-21&l=as2&o=2&a=B00KK6FLMQ

This is a book about the fans, written for the fans, with all the flair and banter that bring the beautiful game to life. No other sport has a culture quite like it.

Football chants are the grassroots of the game, from the Premier League all the way down to the Conference and beyond. They’re funny. And they’re sharp. And in the UK they run very deep. In this witty and insightful account, Tim Marshall tells the story of British football through the songs and chants that give it meaning.

Tim Marshall explores the weekly ritual from the industrial revolution to the sexual revolution, touching on issues of race, class and regional identity. From Chelsea and Tottenham to Leeds and Liverpool; from Newcastle to Norwich and Celtic, Rangers and Dundee, he gives us both the history and the funniest, most up to date examples.

Telling stories of the deep-rooted, tribal rivalries between the great industrial cities, via Elgar’s chant for Wolverhampton Wanderers, to the moving origins of Captain John Currie Lauder’s ‘Keep Right on to the End of the Road’, now sung by thousands of Birmingham City fans, this book brings to life the love, hate, passion – and humour – that are the spirit of British football.

This is a book about football and Britain, and Britain and football. You can’t fully understand one without the other; and if you haven’t got a sense of humour it’s not worth even trying.

Tim Marshall is available for interview. As Diplomatic Editor of Sky News, he is a leading authority on foreign affairs and has reported from 30 countries, including the wars in Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Israel. His blog Foreign Matters was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize 2010. When Tim is not in Damascus wearing a flak jacket he can mostly be found on the terraces of a northern football club that used to be famous, but isn't any more.
