ChromeCast

Yay!

I have 2. Got 1 about 12 months ago when they were released in the US from someone who went over there. Then got another a month ago via eBay.

1 downstairs in the lounge, then 1 upstairs in the bedroom. Watch stuff downstairs then take it upstairs.

I buy movies on Google Play movies, subscribe to Google all access music, and subscribe to Netflix. Then with BBC iPlayer and YouTube that's pretty much my whole TV use on the Chromecasts.

Been very impressed with the stability and performance. Rock solid and they just work.

I bought one last Friday, I didnt really need one so I suppose that says something about the pricing of it.

I find it OK, it streams films very well in Plex and as I dont have Netflix at the moment the only other streaming I have tried is Youtube which again worked fine. The addition of Iplayer and BTsport will help its cause too.

My daughter has one of the cheap Chinese android boxes which I bought her last year for £50.00 and in comparison to that is where the Chromecast suffers because it can stream Plex, Youtube, Iplayer, Demand 5, ITV Player and she can play games on there as well. Since you can buy these TV sticks on ebay for less than £30.00 and a cheap air mouse if I had nothing it would be an interesting decision to make.

It will never happen but if you could cast Skygo that would would be fantastic

I don't see why it wouldn't happen. Sky don't have a competing product.

Ah, good. I was about to add to my existing BT thread, but this is relevant.

I think I'm going to get one of these, but the only query I have is about the fact that you need HDTV.

My TV is supposedly 'HD ready' rather than true HD - will the Chromecast work with it?

Well you cannot do Skygo through Apple TV and you cannot download Skygo to any Tablet that supports HDMI Out, essentially they would be giving Sky Multiroom away for free if you could use Chromecast and I cannot see them doing that.

They'll lose the multiroom revenue to tablets anyway. I doubt they'll be charging for multiroom in a year. They'll have a charge for additional SIMs and that's it.

I think there's pretty much 0% chance of Sky allow SkyGo to be used with Chromecast. For the same reasons they wont put a SkyGo app onto Smart-TVs. They want as many people to use their boxes as possible, they want as many people to use their on-demand service as possible throught the box. They seem to be pushing that a great deal at the minute, to a point of giving free box upgrades to users who do not have Sky boxes compatible with On Demand. As for multi-room, I guarantee that Multiroom will be going out for at least another 2 years, probably another 7. They will move away from multiroom when they move away from using physical cards in their boxes. Multiroom is still hugely popular, I have 2 multiroom cards for example.

Is there XBMC integration with Chromecast yet?

SKygo - people pay them whatever it is, a fiver a month, to watch the telly on the tablet or phone or computer - it's an additional source of revenue, not a replacement, I'd guess.

multi-room - in  your house only. SkyGo - anywhere with a wi-fi or 4G signal. Different things

Like stevo said, SkyGo is free if you have a subscription. They've already separated delivery of programming from their boxes. It's only logical that they continue in the same vein by allowing casting. If the BBC can do it for content they broadcast, so can Sky. There's nothing forcing Sky to do this, but I don't understand them allowing tablets and phones but not casting.
