Interesting how he set his team up for the Ethihad game

Goalkeeper

4 x defenders

2 x holding midfielders/DM's

3 x attacking midfielders

1 x striker

How many managers/fans would see the virtue of 2 holding midfielders....these guys protected Terry and Cahill and gave insurance to the 3 attacking midfielders and license to play....IMO in short they were the catalyst of the whole performance.

Liverpool played a similar system at their height when Souness & Case played those roles.

we had something similar at our height with Bremner & Mortimer...... Cowans, Morley and Shaw playing the 3 attacking midfelders with Withe up front, shaw was a bit more striker, but as the famous Euro goal illustrated he was in midfield when the move started.

I don't think we have the personel to play with 2 holding players, if I am being honest, because to do it successfully you need them to have a bit of guile like the ones above.

When teams like city and Barcelona in their pomp are showing signs of invincibility, its great to see a tactician like Mourinho negate it like he did last night and the famous performance with Inter Milan in the Camp nou.

There is so much to learn from this guy.

Without wishing to sound like captain obvious, 20 major honours in 11 seasons suggests Jose knows quite a bit about how to win football matches more than this thread does.

it's not like we've ever played with 2 holding midfielders, three attacking players and one striker.

edit: actually, we haven't. not this year anyway.

I would have thought 4231 would suit us very well.

El Ahmadi

Westwood

Weimann

Delph

Abgonlahor

Benteke

Only trouble is neither KEA OR Westwood are really defensive midfielders. No where near strong enough or good enough at tackling.

And before you trot the stats out Con artist I know KEA is a good forward press and gets his foot in but he isn't a big brute in the mode of Luis, Matic etc.

Also lots of clubs have been using this system so Mourinho wasn't breaking the mould last night. Everton been using it all season, Spurs have used it as have Arsenal.

It's just a 4231. Not exactly breakthrough stuff.

The difference is Mourinho's ability to micromanage every detail and have his players follow through on his precise orders.

Oh and his two DMs were over 20 Mill each.

I think what the OP is saying is that typically even 4-2-3-1s use a normal cm, someone like Ramires or Ramsey that drives forward frequently. Mourinho chose to use two guys who sit in front of the defense and aren't typically guys who drive forward, and it mitigated the opposition brilliantly. It's not breakthrough stuff, that's true, but it's very intelligently and mourinho is one of the best.

One was bought for 20 mil AND the other one.

Well, originally yes but then bought back again.

The 0-0 with West Ham has been quickly forgotten hasn't it.

I don't think José will lose too much sleep over the West Ham game. On another day they would have won that game comfortably.

On the other hand, the best chance of the game was West Hams and had carroll connected they would've won.

What prompted me to write this is that sometimes there is an obsession with attacking midfielders as the answer to all ills.

I was trying to highlight an alternative way to win a game from a different angle.i.e focus on defence and counter.

There is not much new in in football in terms of systems we have been operating for 150 years so there isn't much chance of coming up with something new.....but I thought that was pretty obvious.

From the posts I have read on here I would have thought 2 holding midfielders would not have readily been suggested.
