Horse Racing Thread

Was thinking about it a few weeks back how there was pretty much a thread for every other sport bar this one. Apologies if this clashes with the Beat the bookies thread but I think there's so much more to talk about than merely betting.

Think the Haldon Gold Cup is a fascinating renewal today, Cue Card has a pretty much perfect record when fresh but has to give a nice few pounds to some interesting contenders. Should make for a cracking little race.

The Melbourne Cup was today which is the biggest race in Australia.

The horse I had in the sweep was 2nd for most of the race then died in the arse on the final straight.

That's all I know.

Oh and a French horse broke it's leg and had to be put down :(

When drunk at a racecourse I backed a horse called Sun Tzu because I liked the name.

It was my biggest win so I decided to look out for its races and put some money on. I forgot to do this and it won its next four races.

Yeah a big fan of the nags... Flat season is just coming to the end. Been a decent season but I think it has suffered from not having a superstar like Frankel. Every other top horse has flattered to deceive this year.

NH season is now just starting. Will be interesting to see if the top hurdlers like Big Bucks and Hurricane Fly can stay ahead of a few of the promising younger horses coming through.

Flat season started at the weekend... early predictions for the Classics?

Enjoyed the Dubai World Cup meeting at the weekend as well... very entertaining.

Think Ruby Walsh will be in the prize money at Fairyhouse today.

Not a tip but I can't resist having a third punt on across the bay. 2013 it was at the front but it's legs just went and dropped right back at the end, then last year it was the one that was forced the wrong way by Tidal Bay but still had respectable finish.

Betting is hard enough, This is the only race i never take serious or bet on properly for the outright winner.

If you like the name, colour or its your lucky number then stick on what you can afford to loose.

The only Tip you can get for this race is "Don't let the price put you off!" (unless your following the sentiment & house wife money that will be going onto a false short priced Favourite) **** that for a game of soldiers!

My bit of fun is, Soll, The Druids Nephew, Night In Milan, First Lieutenant - X12 Forcasts & X24 Tricasts.

Most big firms will be paying out on the first 5 & 6 home so make sure you check with your bookie first or take your money next door  ;)

Good Luck All if punting.

To be fair there are a few pointers you can follow when backing the national.

1. Don't back anything over 11-6

2. Don't back female riders

Only 36 more runners to eliminate now, easy!

If your interested in the weights, in the past 32 years only three horse have won with more than 11st on their backs – Hedgehunter 2005, Don’t Push It in 2010 and Neptune Collonges in 2012

Not sure how relevant that is when you can turn it upside down as say 3 of the last 10 winners have carried more than 11st and now the course is slightly shorter and the fences more manageable.

Here's some more pointers.

3. Nothing aged under 8 has won the national for 75 years.

4. Nothing aged over 12 has won the national for 92 years.

That's another 3 horses down.

33 more to eliminate.

Because 29 0f the last 33 have carried 11st or less.

Or 34 out of the last 40 years since Red Rum carried 12st in 1974

Anyway, back to the bent fork system.
