Take me to the River - Fulham Away report

They come round faster than birthdays, important games these days. But in a rather more welcome way. Today it was time to go down to Fulham, for one of the best away trips of each season.

Gunners fail to hit the target as do we!

A good performance witnessed by a third very good crowd in 8 days against an Arsenal side that could have gone top with a win showed that we are not for being distracted by our forthcoming Cup Final in the league as we had already demonstrated on Saturday we would not be in the FA Cup!

Are we going to Wembley once, twice or thrice?

Another three goals and another FA Cup win at Villa Park. We now stand only 2 ties away from a second Wembley appearance this season and three from a second Cup Final so does anyone fancy making it a cup double?

Que sera sera!

Well we were not expecting that were we? Two goals down within 25 minutes had wiped out our first leg advantage and left us in real danger of becoming only the third team in the 50 year history of this competition to win an away leg but not reach the final. But our six goal salvo did for Big Sam’s Blackburn and put us back at Wembley after a 10 year absence!

We fail to burst their bubbles!

These two dropped points may cost us a great deal when the points are added together in early May. Struggling West Ham have taken four points from us this season and must be wishing they could play us every week as those 4 points may well keep them up as might dropping 5 points against them keep us outside of the top 4!

Someone Almost There - Blackburn Rovers League Cup Semi Away Leg Report

It was a long time coming last night's match - both in terms of a wait for a semi final and of course the postponement of the original game a week or so ago.
We hoped that the the contrast between the fevered desire to get hold of tickets for the game by us lot and the indifference shown by the Rovers fans would be reflected in the performances of the two teams over this game and the return leg next week, and to an extent it was, for the first half at least.

The cup that cheers!

A win from the first of our January trilogy of cup ties against Blackburn extinguished their hopes in the FA Cup and proved a welcome tonic to us on the back of two successive league defeats!

Torres steals the points!

Two defeats in three days has taken us from fourth to sixth and from eight points clear of Liverpool to being just two points ahead of them. We now face a season defining month and must ensure that a second season of immense promise does not implode with a dismal run of results!

PB returns for a somewhat downbeat spot of half term analysis. Can Villa crack the big four, or better yet challenge for a long overdue title as some have claimed?

Nine points from three games in an 8 day period is Championship form. OK lets not get too carried away but as we enter the festive period we now look realistic Champions League contenders as we prepare for a 6 pointer against Arsenal and a home game against mid-table Liverpool!

Jiggery Pokery - Man Utd away report

I imagine Darren Fletcher's post match interview may have been along these lines

It was jiggery pokery, trickery, chokery,
how did they open us up,
Robbery, muggery,
Villa skull-duggery,
We never have any luck,
What a delivery,
I might as well have been,
marking a lumbering galoot
Jiggery Pokery who were these nobodies
making us look like buffoons

(with apologies to Neil Hannon)

Ah, the magic of the cup, not the big cup obviously, that’s like the magic of David Copperfield, all disappearing pyramids and giant sheets, this is more like a bloke in a club with a pigeon and a big hat.

…and erm Gary Gardner.

Another home win has taken us back above Liverpool into fifth, has left us level on points with fourth placed Spurs for a minimum of 24 hours and has kept us 5 points clear of the eighth placed team whose supporters must be having nose bleeds!

You have to hand it to Spurs (or the referee did)!

It seemed to me there were potentially three hand balls by Spurs players last night rather than just one. One of them was spotted by the officials, one might have been ignored by them because it led to a goal for us anyway (if the officials are to be given the benefit of the doubt) but the third cost us the game!

Part Time Moral England - Burnley Away Report

Burnley's got a lot to be proud about right now. At the top of the town's list of course, is their Football Club. Brought back to the nation's attention by the virtues of Owen Coyle, hard work and a pleasing willingness to play the right way.

As Christmas approaches, the goose is getting fat, and the Villa supporter begins to dream of former glories. The 50th anniversary of Villa's 21 goals in three games is now with us, and some of us remember that time. But how about the more remote times?

This game at least was at the rather novel time of 3 pm on a Saturday. Marvellous.
